& it landed in an Army base!

November 17th, 2006

Very recently, I had bought a pair of Reebok shoes… for the sole purpose of casual wear & some Tennis. But the shoe’s pasting gave in rather quickly & I had to leave it in Delhi’s showroom for repairs.

…fast-forward to Wednesday (15th Nov, 2006), I was again bugged in the morning by my Mom to go & get the parcel which she had sent via normal-post. That contained the fixed pair of shoes & some other personal stuff. Two days before, a local postman had come to my office & had handed over a “Green Channel” (stupid looking) chit to our security officer (Singh uncle) & asked him to convey a message to me that I can collect it from the 9-BRD post office.

The address mentioned on that chit was most strangest address as it seemed! Nobdy in the office knew about it… except Singh uncle. He told me that it was some sort of militry base! I suspet, had he not be from militry itself, he would also have had no clue about it.

Anyways, after my usual lunch at D-25, I headed over to the address as suggested to me. The post office was about 6-7 kms away from my office (& home) & was a small old building inside a militry base. That stupid looking “Green Channel” came to my rescue as it was an entry ticket into the base! Woot!

I was in a full mood to bash the postmaster… for two reasons :
1) That I was not supposed to come to the post office to pick up my packet, He was supposed to deliver it to me!
2) If he demands some extra money to gime me my packet… I was ready to go to an extra step & file a complaint if he asks something like that!

But… things turned out to be a bit different when I reached the post office. It was their lunch time & I was told that we (me & others waiting to recieve their parcels) would have to wait till 3PM to get our packets. It was 2:40PM by my clock… & I thought… these freaking govt officials, would take atleast 30 minutes from now on to get back to their seats! But I was surprised to see that by 2:45PM, everyone was back on their seats… call it a militry style effect or what… but everyone was back before time!

Ok.. I said and went on to ask the post master about my packet. There was a person from “Tech Mahindra” standing before me in the queue & was inquiring about one of his parcel that was sent to him via “normal-post” from US. It had a router packed in it. As expected, his parcel had not reached the post office (PO) & he was obviously angry… why was he called & given intimation of the parcel when it had not reached the PO. But again to my surprise, the Head POst Officer, was so polite in talking to him that I forgot all of my anger! Somehow, the Officer convinced the man that his parcel has not arrived & he can check back via phone tomorrow. Convinced, the man went back… sulking :)

During their conversation, i was searching for my own parcel, which I found lying on the ground just besides the officer. My turn came & he asked me the purpose. I pointed him to the parcel & he asked me for an ID proof. I flashed my “Temp Driving Lic”… which he scanned for nearly a minute, back & forth! Satisfied, he took out a sheet… some sort of a form & I was like… oh no… not a form! I was in no mood to fill a form! I had to finnish a million tasks back at the office. But nicely enough, he himself filled in the form quickly & handed me the packet. I seriously had expected that he’d now ask for a favour… but he did not!

& I was out of the PO in a second, back to my bike & off to my office.

What really took me that how wrong we think about government officials. Even my mom is a government employee & i’ve known some instances which proove beyond doubt that she’s one very dedicated & honest employee! Then why had i thought negatively about this PO employees? Probably it had to do something with my past experiences maybe… But whatever, the crux is…

Not everyone out there is bad!

My sincere thanks to the PO employees!
(Ok, I can forget that the parcel was to reach me, not the other way around :-D)

How to check if the $file is as original as installed by the rpm?

November 1st, 2006

I assume that you are running a version of FC

1) Import the GPG key from the fedora server

Assuming you are doing it on a FC6 base system
wget -c http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/6/i386/os/RPM-GPG-KEY
rpm –import RPM-GPG-KEY

2) Once import is done, check your rpm with

rpm -V rpm_name

…thanks to paranoid Lap_64 to bring this up!
lolz!
