How to save files sent via BT to any *valid* location

July 28th, 2006

If you frequesntly transfer files to your Symbian 3rd edition phone via BT, you know how painfull it is to see that you cannot move it to a desired location beyond inbox folders.

The workaround is a very simple hack…

Zip the file before sending it & when you’ll click the message in your inbox, the Zip Manager will ask you to extract/copy it to a location on phone/mmc… & you are done!

Pack the files in a zip archive & send them to your phone over BT

Either save the zip & extract it later

Or extract it right sway to a folder.

You will then need to use SExplorer to move the files/directories around.

PyS60 shell is usable now… atleast!

July 28th, 2006

I spent few minutes on understanding the problem mentioned here
The bug is filed here

This was my first attempt at the bug…

run python, run the interacive shell
import appuifw as a
import series60_console as s
a.app.body = s.Console()
s.app.body.clear()

Then it struck me, why not add this functionality in the menu? Why type all this (or even s.app.body.clear()) when i need to clear the screen… when I can do it fromt he menu itself.

Result… this patch

PyS60 now showing the option to clear screen.

How to use the new console?
A) Copy the interactive_console.py file from c:\resources to c:\python. This needs to be done because files inside c:\resources are read-only… some symbian 3rd edition restriction crap! Refer to release notes & readme for more on this.
B) Either use the patch to patch interactive_console.py or make the changes yourself. Copy of the edited file is here
C) Run python interpreter on your phone, select run script & run the script you just edited/created in step (B)

Text Editors you can use - myeditor_mod (i used this one), more at isiam.blogspot.com and maybe EasyEdit (Not tried it on E61)

Please file your comments/etc in the bug report.
Note - This is my personal work & I take no responsibility of whatever it might break. PyS60 or Nokia cannot be held responsible for after-effects of this patch.

:-)
Happy hacking!

A new member of RedHatters family

July 26th, 2006

I was sleeping tight & the bell rang… half asleep (rubbing my eyes & yawning), I went to open the door expecting to find Rahul & Satya… & was surprised to feel soft fur rubbing against my feet & I almost jumped with surprise! Somehow they found this cat meow’ing on the stairs & brought him/her home.

This is *Viki* (as Rahul named her/him) & the incident was 2 nights ago. Last night, she/he got so friendly that *it* slept on Rahul’s lap… before we found that small ticks were running through *its* body & had to turn *it* out of the room.

We plan to take him/her to a vet over the weekend & get him/her a good wash… so as she/he can happily sleep on Rahul’s lap.

He/She -> we still dont know if this is a cat or a catty!

Thanks Rahul for the mms pic!

Talking of slipping & being crazy!

July 24th, 2006

Nature can bring you to your knees (or to your bumchees) in a second!

If you dont understand what i’m talking of, go for a trekking once, try climbing on to a peak, however simple it might be.

This saturday, we (Subu, Rahul, Sarah, Aman, Ankit & me) went to trek to Bhaje Caves & the Lohgadh fort. Bhaje caves were at about half an hour climb (mostly stairs) & the way to Lohgadh fort was rest of the 8 kms climb.

Sarah, Subu, Rahul, Aman & Ankit @ Bhaje caves, have their back to a big valley.

I even managed to toss in the coint into the stoop (in just 6 throws), which was considered an auspicious thing & was assured that anything that i wish for would be granted. Since i borrowed the coing from Ankit, I happily let him have half of the wish :)

BTW, i dont understand, why all my pictures come so hazy & almost ghost like!

After we finished having fun at the caves, we decided to split. Sarah, Ankit & Subu decided to follow the steps back to the road & Me, Aman & Rahul decided to try the other way… through the waterfall & into the terrain. Though small ways “pakdandi’s” were visible to us, we were not sure if this would lead us to the bottom. SInce we did not find it going up… we thought, what the hell, it will take us somewhere. Our decision was supported by some locals, who were there with lots of kids… 10-12 years old kids. We then crossed our way through the waterfall, which was very very slippery. Though we were facing really hard time balancing our shoes & trying not to slip, the kids were climbing onto the rocks (with water flowing down) as if they had glue on their shoe soles. They were not even using their hands to aid their body weight… surprised, we shook our heads & moved on. With aalam leading the way, we were sure that we’ll get down… sooner or later (:-P)

Boy, the stones & the mud were really slippery there… & on top of that, I was wearing my sport shoes & that upwards bend in them (that fold in jogging shoes towards the toes) was doing no good to me & the ground below my soles. Rahul & Aalam had to get hold of me twice to catch me from slipping down… The slippery ground was no good for even aalam too. Even he slipped. The only soul happily moving around was Rahul… lucky chap!

Since there was no “actual” way down, Aalam was making one as he went… ducking under thorny bushes, stepping over rocks. I had to literally crawl through some bushes at times. Crawling on my back WAS an experience & had all my jean covered with wet mud! eaahh… Finally it’ll be going for a wash after 3 months :-D

As i said, sooner or later…. we reached the base & met the other team, who was waiting for us.

The next climb was not that tough… it was just a straight walk up the hill & since Ankit had already been there, finding our way was not atall a problem. Infact, it seemed that this trek was quite popular amongst the masses. We saw atleast 15-20 more teams.

Climbing up there was also special because it was such a scenic treat to the eyes!

That cliff behind the group had a big see through hole just at the peak & it looked as if it was an opening to another dimension!

The fort at the top was worth all the climb. When we reached the top, it was raining so hard that we couldn’t face the rain & even after covering our faces with the windcheater/raincoats, the splattering sound of the rain was a bit too harsh to bear. Drenched to our innermost things, we reached the top & ankit lead us to the edge of the cliff. The wind & the rain were so harsh up there that you had to be up there to experience my words. While aalam, sarah & subu stayed behind, me, ankit & rahul went to the actual edge of the cliff. THAT was the moment worth all that 8 kms climb! We felt at the top & the edge of the world together. One moment the mist (we were standing in the clouds!) would clear, giving an orgasmic view of the valley below & the other second it would reduce our visibility to just 10 metres. We all three stood there for about 3 minutes & *did our stuff* before getting back with the team.

Before climbing down, we took a pit stop at one of the turns in the fort & cheered over a glass of pepsi each. With rain full on, we were unsure that were we drinking pepsi or rain water! Sarah said that it was the craziest thing she had ever done… hahaha.

This time I was prepared for the end… unlike last time, I had an extra set of clothes… just that i forgot a replacement for my water dripping shoes… next time i’ll be prepared for even that! I remember, last time when we had stopped at the Food Mall at the Pune-Mumbai highway, I was looking like as if I was straight out of live-in jeans add… with water still dripping from them.

We reached home saftely (& in one piece) at about 6-7pm.

It was an awesome trip… One, because it was our first & last with Sarah. I wish to see her again in office sometime soon :) & Two… we did some craziest things I could ever imagine myself doing… slipping from the rocks, crawling through bushes & thick mud, having pepsi in such a rard hitting rain that it was almost splashing the drink out of our glasses! & how can I forget the thing we did at the TOP and the EDGE of the world… lolz!

BTW, we did also went on to a nice lunch with Sarah on Friday at Yana Sizzlers.

Runa, Sarah & Ani

Our team… missing Jassy here… the *lassy* guy!

Okay, this pic made till here just for personal reasons… hehehehe

:-)
We are already all set for our next trek! Wanna *trek* along?
